A Nonbeliever's Sighting by ~WindShadow:iconWindShadow:

The forbidden knowledge of an Angel
Led to the anticipation of having Sight,
Whereas Faith alone did not make him a
Believer in any burdened Cross,
Nor any crown of Thorns atop the head of
“The King of the Jews.”
Nor did his lack of Sight allow him to believe
In anything but himself, where angels and
God himself were only an illusion.
But he witnessed enough throughout his lifetime
To at least acknowledge the difference between
Life, Death.
So while he sat on his white, unpadded hospital bed,
With an IV in his bruised arm and a nurse by his bedside,
He continued to ponder the concepts and complexities of
Life, Death,
Until his heartbeat slowed and the
Angel of Death wrapped His wings around
his exposed, disbelieving soul.

Author's Comments

This is my second poem for my senior writing project.
This poem focuses on the playwright Wit by Margaret Edson.

The theme I chose to connect to is: In order to live fully, one must learn to accept and appreciate humanity while surrendering control of their lives by leaving their fate in the hands of a higher power. (Ultimately, one’s life and death is out of their control despite the struggle to control every aspect of humanity)

Note: The angel of death idea is similar to that of an older poem I wrote, but I did it because it fit well with this particular theme.

Enjoy.

Life, death. Soul, God. Past, present. Not insuperable barriers, not semicolons, just a comma.

Beautifully done.
